Extraordinary Experiences Take to the Road in Escape from Dullsville

It all starts when a claustrophobic fetus, tired of its surroundings, decides to make an early exit. An avalanche of bizarre happenings follows because, after all, a single extraordinary circumstances tends to allow for more incredible circumstances to happen. In Escape from Dullsville by Andy Ristaino, due out from SLG Publishing in December, the precocious fetus becomes embroiled in the plots and schemes of the likes of little green men, mad scientist puppets, government cover-ups, jet-packed babysitters, strange cults, anarchists, beatniks, psychotic magicians, truckers, and crazy mothers, as it goes on the most wigged-out of road trips through the good ol' U.S. of A.

Escape from Dullsville, a 288-page black-and-white graphic novel, collects the entire run ofAndy Ristaino's comic Life of a Fetus, which was published by SLG from 1999 to 2001. It also features more than 80 new pages, including the previously unpublished issue eight, "Little Billy and Dr. Otto" comic strips, and background material. A hefty dose of of science fiction, politics, non-linear storytelling and innovative art, Escape from Dullsville tells an extraordinary story as only Andy Ristaino (The Babysitter) can concoct.

"Escape from Dullsville combines all of the genres I like," said Ristaino. "Crazy road trip movies, sci fi, '60s exploitation, comedy. It's basically a jumble of cult movie culture. The comic was designed around creating a universe that could change and grow as my ideas changed and grew," he explained. "A place to put any and all characters I created and a platform on which they can all exist at once, in a kinetic mental jumble with fluidity of storytelling, both visual and textual."

Escape from Dullsville can be pre-ordered at comic book stores now with the Diamond code OCT090664. Its ISBN is 978-1-59362-182-7.

The rest of the comic book industry is gearing up for New York Comic-Con, but at SLG, we're preparing for the February 6th opening of our new gallery show, The Art of Andy Ristaino.

Yes, we are showing off the artwork of the creator of Life and a Fetus and The Babysitter at the beautiful Boutiki, and it is going to astound you. If you come by, that is. And you should. We'll have food, drinks, and live music, too. And with theremin-toting Andy's musician friends, you can bet the music is going to be interesting. The show is part of San Jose's South First Friday Art Walk.

The party starts at 7 p.m.! The Boutiki is located at 577 South Market St., San Jose, CA 95113. Here's the parking situation: There is some street parking about a block south of us on Market St. and a municipal parking lot about a block north, under the overpass. There is also a limited amount of parking on Reed St., which is the nearest cross street to us.

Hope to see you there! You can RSVP on the Facebook event page, too.

PRESS RELEASE: The Babysitter

SLG to Publish The Babysitter, Its BIGGEST Graphic Novel Yet!

Setsuko is your ordinary Japanese freshman in high school. During the day you can find her studying half-heartedly for exams, going to class, socializing with her peers, battling off giant killer robots, preventing global conspiracies from running rampant, eating lunch, destroying alien invaders, doing homework, annihilating restless spirits of the dead, and other mundane things. Oh yeah, she also manages to babysit sometimes at a very reasonable rate of $10 per hour.

Using only his pop culture knowledge of Japan (having never visited the place before) creator Andy Ristaino (Life of a Fetus) brings us his own unique perspective of the land of the rising sun through Setsuko's daily adventures in SLG Publishing's special oversized printing of The Babysitter. But why attempt to recreate an entire country that he hasn't visited? "It seemed like a good idea to make the comic about living in Japan based solely on my pop culture knowledge that I've gathered from a lifetime of studying far too much manga and anime," Ristaino says.

The book's unique art style, inspired Will Eisner and Ristaino's own studies of claustrophobic art, is intended to parody and deconstruct established manga conventions. Where manga tends to be small in size, easily read, with clean art lines, The Babysitter represents the complete opposite in its mammoth presentation, dizzying art panels, and bold style. "I wanted to create a book that you couldn't just skip ahead and read the last panel to find out what happens… something you had to translate, concentrate on…like one of those magic eye puzzles," says Ristaino.

The Babysitter Collection
(ISBN 9781593621346) arrives in stores this August at 112 pages and measures at a colossal 9.5 x 15 inches. The volume collects issues #1-3 of The Babysitter and is packed with special features including concept art and a brand new full length color story. It will be available in bookstores, comic stores and at SLG Publishing's website, www.slgcomic.com.
