Zombies Calling in November

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 9/26/07

Joss thinks her life sucks. Compared to the zombie movies she loves, her worries about midterms and student loan debt are pretty boring. So it's no surprise that when she tells her roommates that she's been attacked by a swarm of real-life, brain-hungering zombies -- zombies! -- they have the nerve to think she's making it up. But Joss knows she's sane, and it's a good thing, too, because the zombies are real, and she's the only one who knows how to fight them. Armed with "The Rules," truths about fighting zombies gleaned from zombie movies, Joss and her roommates just might make it out of their dorm alive. Their story is told in Zombies Calling, a new graphic novel to be published by SLG Publishing in November.

The question of what to do in the event of a zombie attack is one that has crossed the mind of Faith Erin Hicks, the creator of Zombies Calling. "I got the idea for Zombies Calling when I realized two things," Hicks said. "One, that every zombie movie seems to follow a set of rules, and two, that if zombies broke down my wall right at that moment, all I had to fight them off with was a potato masher."

Hicks's protagonist Joss faces a similar problem, being in Canada, where firearms aren't readily available, but she fights it out with pluck and aplomb -- and a spork. "I really wanted to do a comic with a geeky, pop-culture-obsessed heroine," said Hicks. As a result, at least one comics blogger has declared himself "totally in love" with Joss after reading an ashcan of Zombies Calling at last year's Alternative Press Expo. And no wonder -- drawn in Hicks's energetic style, Joss is cute, lively, confident and kick-ass as she navigates through legions of undead.

But toying with the hearts of comics readers wasn't Hicks's only motivation. She also wanted to "take some completely unfair potshots at the university student loan system," she said. "After all, no zombie movie is complete without social commentary."

Zombies Calling, a 104-page graphic novel, will be published in November 2007 and is available for pre-order now at comic book stores with the Diamond code SEP073317 and will soon be available at SLG's website, www.slgcomic.com, where a preview of the book is available to read.

Zombies Calling preview
The link to the preview doesn't work, and I haven't been able to find it on the SLG website. (And I *really* want to see the preview. I've been looking forward to this book since you mentioned it back in April!)

Thanks,
Kevin Melrose
